The Bridge (US) - Episode 8 "Vendetta" Recap

No sex this week.  To me, that's a good thing.

Instead, there was an episode that cut out the meandering and delivered ~45 minutes of drama.

Spoilers ahoy in 3...2...1....

The circumstances of FBI agent David Tate's death are odd, to say the least. But let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Daniel Frye is partying with some friends in what appears to be a Mexican strip club.  It is six years before the main storyline(s).  Now we're getting flashbacks?  Really?  Thankfully, it's just this one scene.  Frye appears to be buddy-buddy with another guy who drives off in a Porsche, but then he wanders off on his own with no explanation.  If the guy Frye is with is Santi Jr., this explains something later on.

Sonya, Marco, and Hank are busy interrogating Jack Childress.  I think I missed the connection last week: apparently, Childress' car had been stolen and was found at the Meadows residence, where Gina's father (a shrink who dealt with El Paso PD and federal agents) was found dead from a "Colombian necktie".  As we know, Gina later ended up dead too.  So it seems as though whoever stole Childress' car is responsible for those murders.  And what Childress tells Sonya is that one particular FBI agent took his stuff and never bothered to return it.  That agent is David Tate.

What happened to David Tate?  According to Marco, he's dead.  Marco even attended his funeral.  Marco was doing some other stuff on the side that we'll get to momentarily.  The catch is, no one ever saw the body, and he was cremated with the blessing of his sister-in-law.

Sonya, being who she is, latches onto this like a dog with a bone and refuses to let go, even when Hank and Cooper try to dissuade her.  Cooper says some rather unflattering things to her, which leads her to take solace elsewhere.  She is then met by Marco's son Gus.  Apparently, Gus has a bit of a crush on Sonya. I didn't really catch that before either, though it was certainly intimated.

The other main story of this episode involves Charlotte and Ray.  As usual, Ray is doing something stupid; this time he's enlisted his friend Tim to bring some guns over the border, through the tunnel that is conveniently located on Charlotte's ranch.  He's also letting Tim stay in the pool house.  Charlotte, understandably, is not pleased with this.  What neither of them know is that Tim is compromised: he's a snitch for the ATF.  Not only that, but the guns have transmitters in them, which are later found by one of Graciela's men.  This is sure to have repercussions for both Ray and Tim.

Linder has problems of his own.  He's having dreams about his employer's daughter, while Galvan laughs at him.  He's so tormented by his feelings that he goes into work and begs off for a while.  The lady there doesn't seem inclined to let him have time off from "bleaching the floor", but Linder is insistent.

Meanwhile, there's a new library opening in Juarez, and a bunch of rich people are attending.  Santi Jr. is there and finds himself standing and drinking with Frye's co-worker.  She asks him about Frye but gets nothing in return.  He asks her to leave with him, but she decides it'd be better not to.  Also in attendance are Marco's wife Alma and her bald friend that we've seen before.

The bald man sees Santi Jr. go up to the men's room and decides to go up there as well, after promising to meet Alma outside in five minutes.  He slits Santi Jr.'s throat and leaves a bloody handprint on the mirror.  Apparently, he's confident that he won't be caught.

However, Sonya's determination has paid off.  She figured out that someone has been masquerading as Kenneth Hasting, whose body was supposedly buried under a concrete slab (Cooper gets the assist there).  Apparently, David Tate killed Hasting and stole his identity, since he now has a driver's license in Hasting's name, and Marco recognizes his face.

Once Santi Jr.'s body is found, Sonya, Marco, and Hank come face-to-face with Capitan Robles, Marco's boss back in Chihuahua.  He assures them that his people are trustworthy.  I have my own doubts about his assessment.  Marco notices that there is a bead near Santi Jr.'s body; it appears to be from a necklace from a woman that he was intimate with.  As it turns out, that woman was David Tate's (now deceased) wife.  And now the pieces are falling into place.  Marco had an affair with Mrs. Tate, so now Tate is going after Mrs. Ruiz (and doing a good job of it).

The episode ends with Tate and Alma in the car driving off together.  I feel like this could be troublesome for her.  Unless she knows something that she hasn't told us, that is.  From all appearances, she doesn't seem to know anything about Hasting/Tate and his past that Marco is involved with.  She's angry with Marco for cheating on her and is ready to go off on her own dalliance full bore.

Next week promises to be equally thrilling, as Tate and Marco finally establish contact.
