Spoilers after the cut.
I'll be honest: Captain Komamura is not among my favorite characters. I'm more interested to see what Shinji does...once he gets off his ass. That may be awhile.
But in the meantime, what we've got here is a pretty engaging flashback/back story involving Komamura, who is unmasked once again but doesn't look like the Captain we're used to seeing.
Komamura saves Hinamori from suicide (more or less) before revealing his new form. He tore out his own heart in a sacrifice to his grandfather (a relative of some degree, if not grandfather) and gained the ultimate technique of his tribe, Human Metamorphosis. Using this technique, he turns from Captain Doggy to Captain Angry-Looking Blonde Dude. As the Stern Ritter he's fighting adroitly points out: "That isn't the doggy face I remember".
Of course, any change to Komamura's body results in a change to his bankai, as demonstrated on the last page of the chapter. I still think the Queen Bitch Stern Ritter will blow Komamura back to kingdom come, as he's one of the weaker captains (along with Soi Fong and Kurotsuchi). But for a chapter that is meant to distract from the continued absence of Ichigo, among others, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it did its job. Here's hoping that the ensuing chapters that lack Ichigo still have this kind of impact.
