Bleach 557 - His Life Has Already Been Set Aside

The newest Bleach chapter is out.  So let's talk about it!

Spoilers after the cut.

It's rare that a chapter of Bleach is so powerful, despite a narrow focus. Chapter 557 focuses solely on Komamura and the female Stern Ritter he's been fighting for the last week or two.  On paper, it doesn't sound that intriguing, but there is a concept at play that enlivens the proceedings tremendously.

Basically, we learn more about his Human Metamorphosis Technique.  In giving up his heart, he's putting his life on the line.  He claims that he has taken an "immortal" body to kill off the female Stern Ritter.  But really, what it sounds like is that no matter the result, he won't live to see the finale. For a character who was not as powerful as some of the other captains to do this actually seems fairly heroic.  Indeed, he is showing his devotion to the deceased Captain-Commander Yamamoto.

For once, I'm in Komamura's corner.  I hope he wins without too much trouble. But at the same time, I'm a bit concerned about what will happen to him after the battle.  His fate looks to have been sealed by using this technique.  Is victory over the Quincy that important that he should give up his life?

I guess since he's doing it for Yamamoto, it just might be.
