Unfortunately, I missed last week's episode, "Lamia". I thought this would severely impact my enjoyment of this week's episode.
Thankfully, my enjoyment was not impacted!
Spoilers after the cut.
Another episode where the title doesn't really make sense to me. Maybe it refers to the person/entity that's bigger than Galvan (according to Adriana). But really, in the universe the show has constructed through the first season and over half of the second...who's bigger than Galvan?
One possible answer is Sebastian Cerisola, CEO of Grupo Clio. He's getting more involved in the series, whether through his tense and intriguing conversations with Galvan, having Frye tossed in jail, going after Adriana and her girlfriend (not personally, but close enough), and trying to get Eleanor on his side.
To be honest, I'm not sure how Sebastian's side is really that much different than Galvan's. It seems irrelevant at any rate, so far as it concerns Eleanor; her loyalty remains with Galvan, due to the person locked in the basement of Galvan's secret hideout.
Someone is tipping off people in the Mexican marines, though, as they assaulted Capitan Robles early in the episode and then infiltrate the aforementioned hideout late. They find the caged man and apparently free him. Galvan is pushed down into his tunnel, where he shoots two of his cronies and places his trust in Obregon (I believe that's his name, but I could be wrong). Luckily for Obregon, his faith in Galvan is unshaken, so he avoids taking a bullet to the head.
The opening doesn't make sense, but I guess that's what I get for missing an entire episode. Sonya is watching an older blonde woman (her mother, according to Zaffy on Twitter) who appears to be homeless. She then leaves a trinket in the older woman's hand and drives away. Unbeknownst to Sonya, she was being watched by Eleanor and Cesar; Eleanor takes the trinket before they drive away. I don't know what this scene has to do with anything; maybe it's a continuation from the events of "Lamia"?
There are also several close-up shots utilized in the episode that really paint Sonya in a flattering light. I try not to point out such things because they really have nothing to do with the story the show is trying to tell, but "Goliath" really brings home the fact that Diane Kruger is a beautiful woman.
As Sonya returns home, she is faced with an intruder who was on a dirt bike earlier in the episode. I can only assume that this man is the "Chopper" that Galvan referred to previously. The "Chopper" punches her out and takes her captive. Not exactly a rousing finale.
Marco and Sonya take a bit of a hit thanks to DEA Agent McKenzie. Of course, we know that Marco didn't kill Tate directly, but Tate is dead and obviously Sonya can only conclude that Galvan had it done at Marco's behest.
Also, Linder and Eva appear in a side story wherein she talks about her life and he hunts down another of the men that held her captive in Juarez. Linder also shares details about his upbringing.
Adriana and Frye each have their own problems; Adriana is dealing with the death (?) of her girlfriend from the previous episode, while Frye goes after Cerisola directly, gets tossed into jail, and then gets freed thanks to Adriana talking to Marco about it. For some reason, Marco gets upset about the thought of Adriana getting killed in El Paso. That would seem to bear watching.
Well, that's about it for Episode 8. I just hope I don't miss the next one! See you next week.
