The Bridge (US) - Season 2, Episode 1 "Yankee" Recap

Season 2 of The Bridge started last night.

Spoilers and confusion galore...after the cut.

Usually, the season premiere is a chance to gradually get to know the characters and plot that one expects to see unfold throughout.

Apparently, the creative team on The Bridge disagrees.

From the beginning of the premiere, the viewer is thrown into a veritable abyss of confusion and intrigue.  This episode was not without its merits, but some clarity sure would help.

The episode begins with Monte (played by Lyle Lovett), a lawyer who recurred in Season 1, heading toward a house.  He discovers a bloodbath and takes a business card, which he then puts in his pocket.

Exactly what happened in that house is unclear.  But we're given a pretty big hint when Eleanor (Franka Potente) and Yovani knock on the door and are met by the man whose business card Monte took.

Speaking of those two, they're apparently part of a drug cartel (which one, we're not told; they might be working for Galvan and they might be working for someone else we've never seen), although in the preview for "upcoming episodes" a character states that it's unusual for a woman to be placed high in the ranks.

Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir) didn't really do much besides look angry, drink beer, and attempt to mislead the new prosecutor for the state of Chihuahua. Maybe that is enough, I'm not sure.  Given that there seem to be so many story lines already, it's hard to say.

Sonya Cross (Diane Kruger) met up with the brother of her sister's killer. Apparently, Dobbs is dying and the brother is there in some capacity (again, we're not told exactly why...either that or I don't remember).  Of course, Sonya has some need to connect with the brother, and they end up sleeping together.

So far, no sightings of cartel leader Fausto Galvan or cartel enabler Charlotte Millwright.  But there are twelve more episodes to go.

The ending of the episode was especially odd.  A woman (it appears to be Eleanor) is covered in blood; as the camera shows her body, a number of tattoos are visible.  She is washing the blood off of herself and requests assistance from a couple of kids that are riding their bikes toward her.

I'm not sure if any of my recap made sense.  If not, well, all I can say is that it reflects the source material, which was jumpy and confusing.  New characters like Eleanor and Yovani were introduced with no fanfare; they literally just showed up.  Monte's appearance at the beginning of the episode was a surprise as well.  My hope is that things become a little more clear next episode (or by episode four, at least) so that the viewers can get a hint as to what the hell is going on.

Because as things stand right now, it'll be damn difficult to figure it out.
