The Bridge (US) - Episode 10 "Old Friends" Recap

Episode 10 of The Bridge was quite awkward!  So let's talk about it.

Spoilers after the cut.

The awkwardness starts off right at the beginning, as Gus and David Tate are riding off together.  Gus eventually gets locked in some sort of container with water leaking in.  Obviously, his time is growing shorter, unless Sonya and Marco can find him.

Marco appears to be coming apart at the seams, though.  He's got plenty of doubt surrounding him and precious little support.  It seems that he and Alma have not yet reconciled; she appears to be as cold toward him as ever, despite the fact that he saved her life.  I thought that would bring them closer together, but it seems to have done nothing as yet.

Sonya is having some trouble recovering from her injuries.  She needs surgery to fix her broken arm, but refuses to get it and instead starts popping Vicodin (like a certain doctor we used to watch on TV) for the pain.  She's also trying to keep Marco sane while they try to find his son.  She's not doing a great job at either endeavor.

Meanwhile, Frye has fallen off the wagon and has to rely on his co-worker to set him straight.  She takes him to an AA meeting (boy, is that ever awkward), but once it is concluded, she sees his car take off without her. Later on we see her at El Paso PD talking to Hank; he doesn't believe her at first, but becomes convinced that Tate is after Frye as well once he learns that Frye was involved (sort of) in the accident that claimed Tate's wife and son.  Now, I wouldn't exactly argue that Frye was involved, personally, though he certainly benefited from it.

Charlotte's got problems of her own, as usual.  We see her outside the courthouse with Ray and her husband's daughter Kate.  It appears that her husband's will was strict in leaving most of the stuff and money to Kate, while Charlotte gets the ranch and the land surrounding it.  Not exactly the most equitable deal.  Then Charlotte has to deal with Ray's friend Tim (who, as you may remember, is a stooge for the ATF).  She enlists Ray to "scare" him, which he does quite well.  But when she gets serious and demands that Ray shoot Tim, well, Ray's not quite prepared for that (though I have no doubt that Cesar would have done it with no compunctions).  Since Ray is too much of a sissy to shoot Tim, Charlotte takes the gun and does the deed herself. She's now committed to a course of action that could get her hands very dirty. Bad enough that she and Cesar have Graciela's blood on their hands.  Now she'll probably have to deal with the ATF as well.

In the end, Marco is called away by Tate and they drive off together in Frye's car.  Marco leaves Sonya behind in order to meet Tate.  He threatens him with violence, but soon realizes that he can't really do anything, because Gus' life is still in danger and he won't find out where he is unless Tate tells him. This conflict sets up Episode 11 quite nicely.

All in all, another great episode, but one that is harder to watch than usual because of the awkwardness in the confessions and emotions that the characters are feeling and confronting.  Marco in particular is tortured throughout.  He's been twisted this way and that by the people in his life and the situation he's trying to solve without losing his son again, this time permanently.
