The Bridge (US) - Episode 12 "All About Eva" Recap

The penultimate episode of The Bridge's first season has aired, so let's talk about it!

Spoilers after the cut.

Last week, I openly asked what the last two episodes of The Bridge would show us.  Yesterday (9/24/2013), the show was renewed for a second season. Before I get into the recap of tonight's episode, I wanted to address this quickly.

I'm not sure a renewal was necessary, to be honest.  As of today, I think the show would work better as one season, complete and untarnished by future episodes or story arcs.  I think it would be better to attempt to wrap everything up in the 13 episodes that were allotted.  That said, since I am a fan of the show, I will continue watching and blogging about it.  I look forward to season 2 and next week's season 1 finale.

It looks like what we have here is the aftermath of season 1's main story. Marco has been through the ringer the last couple of episodes and now we see what it has done to him.  He continues to be distant from Sonya and the rest, though her perseverance eventually gets through to him.  Honestly, he does owe her something, even though his son is dead, she was the one who kept working to find him and refused to let him throw his life away by killing Tate.

In addition, we have some movement with the other subplots that we've seen develop throughout the season.  Charlotte continues her wheeling and dealing; she gets dirtier by the minute, it seems, even without as much screen time as we were accustomed to her getting in the first few episodes. Now she's gone down to Juarez to enlist the services of cartel leader Fausto Galvan.  Could she do anything dumber?  Well, she's eliminated Graciela and Tim without any push-back so far, so maybe this will turn out alright for her. Then again, considering how she and Ray have handled the tunnel since Ray first showed up, I'm not all that confident in her.  It's incredibly dangerous for her to be dealing with a guy like Galvan directly, too.  Couldn't she have sent someone down to Juarez to broker a deal for her?  One would think so, but there's also the argument that if she wants it done right, she has to do it herself, a lesson she likely learned from having to dispose of Tim.

The main body of this episode (as evidenced by the title) is the object of Linder's affection, Eva Guerra.  She has run away from the farm Linder took her to, back to Juarez it seems.  It gets a little murky from there: she accepts a ride from a car with Texas plates, but is then taken to the police station where Marco, Celia, and Capitan Robles work.  From there it's a montage of ...something not quite on the level.  I can't really speculate what happens to her exactly, because it was circumspect and unexplained.  Suffice it to say that Celia is not the type to keep things like this quiet; she goes to Marco at the end of the episode to enlist his help in saving her.

Seeing Linder and Sonya meet again was a bit awkward.  I still have a hard time believing that he's a "good" guy.  His mannerisms and speech pattern indicate otherwise.

Frye is out of the hospital too, just in time to see some definite awkwardness with his co-worker Adriana at her family's house in Juarez.  She reveals that she's an embarrassment to her family because she dates women.  I didn't see that coming, but it does clear up a few things that I noticed from other episodes (including this one).

It would seem that Marco and Sonya will have to do something together to get Eva away from the cops in Juarez.  I would guess that the finale revolves around that, with maybe a touch on Charlotte's dealings with the underworld. It should be exciting stuff.  The first season has been consistently good, if not great all the way through.  Personally, I can't wait to get the entire season on DVD and go through all the episodes again to see what I missed.
